Ever since they've known each other they've always argued as if they hated each other, teasing each other, but when Cove is put in danger the two have no choice but to make a truce so that Jace can protect her.

If she Cove just wants someone who loves and understands her, as opposed to the relationship she has with her family, from which she has felt abandoned; Jace is used to being alone and sure he doesn't deserve love for what he's done in the past.

The combination of the two character traits makes for a balanced relationship, decreasing Jace's grumpiness and Cove's recklessness.
