The plot:

Live your life every minute. You never know when your world can change.

When her boyfriend lets her down for the last time, Brooklyn bookshop owner Bea James makes a decision – no more. No more men, no more heartbreak, and no more pain.

Psychiatrist Jake Steinmann is making a new start too, leaving his broken marriage behind in San Francisco. From now on there'll just be one love in his life: New York.

At a party where they seem to be the only two singletons, Bea and Jake meet, and decide there’s just one thing for it. They will make a pact: no more relationships.

But the city has other plans . . .

The first time they met he was a bartender, she was an invitee to a party where she only knew her brother and his girlfriend (who invited her to make her forget her ex). The second time they saw each other happened for a meeting arranged by Rosie, Ed’s fiancé, brother of Jake, the male protagonist. The following times, instead, they met to discover New York through each other’s eyes, through their favourite places. Between a visit of the Pond and one to Central Park, dispassionate confessions and despite the pact they made the first time, disappointed by their romantic relationships, they got closer and closer until…

Miranda Dickinson, in telling the story of Jake and Bea, highlighted the pros and the cons of the relations, placing the theme of the friendship at the center. The friendship that comes first, which is the basis of every relationships, where one put the happiness of the other first, over his own. As the protagonists have shown us, however, they can’t escape destiny: if you’re destined to be with certain people, you’ll always return to them; you can make bad decisions, mess things up, you can also misinterpreted the signals, but you will always come back to those you care.
